Beauty and the beast

I would like to kickstart this blog by saying "I am beautiful!... and so are you". For the past few months now, the second most spoken topic apart from covid19 of course is #black lives matter or #everybody's lives matter.

                                                I am beautiful

The injustice of beauty bias has affected many people in the world

Many are just obsessed with beauty and skin color throughout the world. And this affects women more than men. In India, Colorism is often gendered.

These lines by Kimberly Jade Norwood in her article "If You Is White, You’s Alright..." Stories About Colorism in America, Washington University in St. Louis School of Law, affected me. "Although my first experience with colorism occurred very early in life, it never went away or otherwise resolved itself. Rather, it grew with me. And in many ways, I grew to understand that the color hierarchy was simply the way of the world. I would eventually marry and have children of my own. And through those children, I would again see colorism grow and sting. I knew that, some day, one day when I had time, I would spend time discussing, highlighting and helping to eradicate colorism."

The injustice of beauty bias has affected many people in the world. People are hired in many companies based on their outer appearance rather than their work skills. Wherever we go, whatever we do, the attractiveness of beauty disturbs us in someway or the other. It hurts to be beautiful and yes it hurts more to not be beautiful.

Attractive people are often judged as kind and honest. And there is always a negative impression on an less attractive individual who are judged purely based on their appearance. Taller men are noticed, blondies are adored, fair skinned women are hired and sometimes attractive women are not hired because of their appearance.

At work place, many lady bosses don't like attractive women who report to them and their performance ratings are affected. Yes! True!!

The discussion on the effects of appearance in human life matters. We all need to be aware of our actions and reactions on beauty bias. We are all good souls but the beast within us don't let us be. So let's control our judgments and prejudices on beauty and let's see fellow human beings for who they are and not for how they look. Let's love ourselves based on what we do and not on how we look. Let's take baby steps to reach this goal small though it may seem the results will be mountainous.  So yes dear readers "I am beautiful!...and so are you"😉

There is a saying "Until one don't know that he is a slave , he can't come out of it". Likewise mos of us don't know we are the pray of color discrimination.

    1. @RAJA RAJAN Thank you. Yes awareness is important. Learning to accept our own self as the way we are gives confidence which helps control discrimination.

  4. The Content is quiet impressive. I know it isn't easy to make people understand that, their judgements based on skin color is not the right. However you managed to bring that point to the core. Your narration is admirable.
Your writing made me to think and that is the strength of a writer(you).

I wish people to see beauty beyond physical appearance..
    Kudos to you.
