Do you like horror movies? Wondering whether horror movies are good for your health?

Vicky Koushal in Bhoot  – Part One: The Haunted Ship

This is an amazing season for scary movie lovers. Lots of horror movies have released this year. And a horror movie lover myself, I badly wanted to write about this. It is definitely a pleasure for horror movie lovers to sit with popcorns and watch their favourite movie either in theatres or at home at night. Some even go to the extreme of watching it alone. Just like book lovers and sports enthusiasts, there is a wide group of fans for scary movies as well. Whether demons exist or not is an entirely different topic. Not all horror films are scary. And it is quite a challenge for filmmakers to give that jump scare and gore. Many of us even predict the next scene. Ok. So Yes! Horror movies give you a thrill but will it have any effects on our mental and physical health? Is it ok to watch them when it comes to our sanity and health? Let’s explore.

A couple bought the Rhode Island house recently where the incidents in the movie Conjuring took place. Cory and Jennifer Heinzen got fascinated by the history behind that house. Even though they were scared, they were also excited about it. They started getting strange noises and doors opening and closing by itself.  Supernatural occurrences started happening after Roger and Carolyn Perron couple moved to this RI house along with their daughters back in the ’70s. We know a lot of movies which says they were real incidents but are they really true? Something which we can only believe if we experience it ourselves but if we do, I am not sure whether we will live to tell the tale! .Kidding! 😊

Fear!

You feel scared when you perceive danger when you are in a fight or flight situation. If you don’t feel fear, you cannot protect yourself from life-threatening situations. While watching a horror movie, you know you are safe at home and it is just a movie but you still can’t help feeling scared of the threat which appears on the TV or your laptop screen. So your body prepares itself to face scary scenarios in life. Sometimes fear is required. So next time a stranger knocks at your door, you will be cautious; you will not go to dark and deserted places all alone.

Just another hobby!

Watching horror movies is also another hobby. Skiing is one of the most dangerous sports in the world. A wrong turn can cause your life. So when people go skiing, bullfighting (another one of the dangerous sport), they know their life is in danger but still would want to do that because they love to do that. Similarly watching scary movies is also a hobby. Of course, it does not mean that it is as dangerous as a dangerous sport. It means that we require some thrill in life, some hobby which gives you immense pleasure and satisfaction after a stressful week. But make sure you do everything moderately whether it is scuba diving or as harmless(Yes! 😉) as watching a movie full of ghosts. And hey if you have a good taste of watching the best horror movies, you can plan your Halloween costume when October approaches!

You feel blessed!

After getting into the roller coaster that is the movie, you will feel relieved and blessed that you only have your home loans, job tensions and family problems to face unlike in the movie where the characters in the movie try to save their life from a demon, trying exorcisms and other techniques to shoo away the ghosts. You will feel gratitude that your life is so much safer from the cast in the horror movies and will try to live your life to the fullest knowing that your life is precious after watching how in a few days the movie casts lose their life by being careless by letting in strangers at home or bringing home weird stuff like toys or other such things that you find in places that you should not be in the first place.

The distraction you most need!

Sometimes all you need is a movie which takes you to a completely different place from life’s tensions. You just have to sit back, relax and get ready to feel the heartbeat faster, faster until the climax and boom you are back happy to be safe at home. For those two or three hours, you forget all your worries. Not bad right!

It is also said that horror movies burn calories because of the fear and faster heartbeat you get out of watching them.  Of course, if you are not a horror movie type person, then you don’t have to watch them. So without much ado download your favourite horror and watch them this weekend. Happy movie!
